65809 Community Association Presents FOR YOUR INFORMATION February, 2000 Why a newsletter? It is a practical way to keep our meetings brief and to the point. Those items which only needed to be stated but not discussed seem to assemble nicely on the back side of the meeting agenda. Now, we can go one step further and post it on the Web. Meetings are important, too! That’s how we get to know one another. That’s where we discuss our hot topics and come to some consensus of opinion. |
|
Quick summary of current hot topics: The East Sunshine rezoning case is back on the drawing board for a new more condensed plan. Still in question is whether commercial development is appropriate along residential East Sunshine. The First Evangelical Free Church has purchased the James River Assembly of God facility and will not be building at Blackman and Cherokee. Remember the 65 and Battlefield deal? A developer is looking at possible project there. The neighbors are ready to work with him and will keep us posted. We generally meet on the third Thursday of each month at the East Sunshine Church of Christ, next to Dairy Queen. However, due to schedule conflicts, our next two meetings have been moved to the fourth Thursdays. Mark you calendars for: 7:30 PM, March 23 and April 27. 65809 Community Association is one of thirty-something neighborhood associations registered with the City of Springfield through the Planning and Development Department. This system allows the city to get in touch with neighborhood leaders when issues come up in a particular area. We recommend that even though your city neighborhood is a part of 65809, you register your neighborhood association with Springfield Planning and Development, 864-1031. AND NOW FOR SOME P. S. A.’S Your nose is valuable. The City Planning and Development Department asked us to tell you that April 1, 2000 is census day, when the nation counts noses. Our community will lose an estimated $685 in federal funding for each person who is not counted, so be sure yours is included.
Done any remodeling lately? Habitat for Humanity has a new project called ReStore. Located at 4535 W. Chestnut Expressway next door to Payless Cashways, ReStore accepts your donations of new or used, but reusable, building materials. They, in turn, use the materials when they build those famous Habitat for Humanity houses or sell them to do-it-yourself remodelers. All earnings go back into Habitat programs and your donations are tax deductible. Got rental property? Keep this place in mind if you need or have remodeling materials. Contact Petra Butler, 831-3841, for more information. Pierson Creek runs through our backyard on its way to the James River, so water quality issues are important to us. The James River Basin Partnership sends us their newsletter. It notes that their membership drive is still underway. You can join and do your part to protect and improve water quality in our streams, rivers and lakes. The JRBP will be happy to hear from you. Call Director Pamela Anderson at 417-724-0499. |
